Sara Kitchen Nightmares. We’ve collected some of the most prevalent kitchen nightmare topics and have compiled them into a list, for your viewing pleasure. Hopefully they will serve as useful information to help you avoid kitchen disasters.

1. “I installed my kitchen cabinets, after I put in my marble countertops. A row of cabinets accidentally fell on the marble, badly cracking countertop!”

2. “I had a great new years party, felt lazy and didn’t want to clean up. Left opened bottles and glasses of wine on white marble countertop overnight; thought it was stain proof.”

3. “My husband was away on an extended business trip and I decided to surprise him by replacing our outdated cabinets. In the demolition process, my contractor came across a hidden stash of videos, which changed my whole perspective on my husband.”

4. “We were installing a center island in our kitchen, until a weak flooring structure and studs decided that the basement would be a better place.”

5. “I bought what I thought was Absolute Black granite countertops until a few weeks later, I noticed that my hands contained black paint after leaning on the counter.”

6. “We paid our contractor 50% upfront for our new kitchen makeover, and after showing up for the first week, we never saw him again.”

7. “We decided to hold my daughter’s wedding reception at our home, and no sooner had I placed the massive wedding cake (which took two days to prepare) on the kitchen table, when the chandelier fell directly on the center. There was cake everywhere, it was completely ruined.”

8.”I love big bay windows, and I’ve always wanted one in my kitchen. We installed one last year that covers most of our kitchen wall, and which overlooks our neighbor’s pretty yard. We spent most of our time in the kitchen and it’s very lovely, especially in the morning when many types of birds gather and frolic. But my dream turned into a nightmare recently when our neighbor, who is in his mid sixties, single and morbidly obese decided to put in a large hot tub in the back yard. Last month, he started hosting hot tub parties, which now appear to be happening every weekend. At about the same time, I started having really bad nightmares, which haven’t stopped.”

9. “We decided to paint the walls of our kitchen this year, and hired our babysitter’s brother, who is very handy and an excellent painter. Unfortunately, he also supplements his income by walking dogs in the neighborhood, which he decided to do while on our project. Somehow no less than four dogs escaped his clutches and decided to take a thorough tour of our large home. Salmon-colored dog prints littered every nook and cranny of our house for days afterwards.”

10. “When it came to ordering our flooring, I decided on wood and asked our contractor, an immigrant with a heavy accent, to look into wood flooring options for us.” The next day we have 400 square feet of wool carpeting stacked outside our kitchen. He thought we said “wool.”

Police Home Decor. Sometimes, when people decide they want to get serious about decorating their homes, the choose a particular artistic style or period to use as a model.

Styles come and go as the years pass, but there is one particular style that gained prominence during the first half of the twentieth century which has stood up well to the test of time. In the twentieth century, art deco took the artistic world by storm during the latter half of the roaring twenties through the 1930s. Although there was a brief period when it lost its popularity, art deco interior design is back in favor with people today.

Volumes have been written about this movement and its effect on popular culture. Examples of the style can be found everywhere from train station architecture to advertising. People decorate in the style by using posters, paintings and prints representative of the period. This is a style of luxury and opulence. Clean geometric lines, bright chrome and offbeat materials that were sometimes quite expensive to work with, made it stand out in contrast to the styles that had come before it. The early examples of this style featured black and white zebra stripe styles, but this later evolved to include more colors.

Some people believe that it was the famous King Tut discovery of the early 1920s that got the art deco ball rolling, due to the fact that the tomb was adorned with many features that later inspired deco artists. Generally however, it is agreed that what would grow into the art deco movement came from the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art which was held in Paris in the year 1925. This event served to show off the architectural designs of Europe, but it had rippling effects in styles and fashions that reached around the globe.

As a movement in artistic design, the style thrived up until the 1940s. During that time, the style was not actually known as, or referred to, as art deco. That now well known phrase was only introduced to the popular vernacular much later when Bevis Hillier, a well known art historian, coined the phrase in the book he wrote in 1968, Art Deco of the 20s and 30s.

The style fell out of favor for a period of years, but the 1980s saw a resurgence in the movement’s popularity. On television, the famous architecture style could be seen in the city of Miami on the police show Miami Vice. People clamored for the luxurious and bold designs. The style has remained popular to this day. Collectible items made from Bakelite in the 1930s such as handsome, telephones in a variety of colors now sell for significant amounts of money at auction. Likewise, large websites devoted to providing decorative accessories to home owners have now started to include retro styled reproductions based on the designs first introduced in the thirties.

Today, people looking to design their homes in this style will often spend large sums of money to purchase original vintage art deco items from the twenties and thirties. Some people however, choose to take advantage of the fact that a large market has sprung up to provide art deco reproductions. Everything from chairs and other furniture to mirrors, chandeliers and works of art can be bought in the art deco style today. Smaller items that are used to adorn and accessorize homes, like figurines, pottery and beautiful glass vases from the period are also very popular. It seems that even in a difficult economic time, people long for the rich and luxurious style of art deco interior design.

Paper Bag Floor Problems

Paper Bag Floor Problems. We have been remodeling houses for over 6 years and have been doing DYI projects for years. One of the biggest expenses with any remodel is the flooring.

Paper Bag Floor Problems. We have been remodeling houses for over 6 years and have been doing DYI projects for years. One of the biggest expenses with any remodel is the flooring.

So when you are looking for a flooring product you look at the cost and durability of a flooring material. The usual flooring products are carpet, wood floors, vinyl and ceramic tiles. With those products in mind, the easiest to use is carpet because it it quick and not too expensive. When we first started out we used carpet. The problem with carpet is that the tenants would destroy the carpet and you could expect maybe 2-3 years out of it depending on the wear , you may get lucky and it will last longer.

On one of the first houses that we renovated we put carpet in it. It was a single story house with a concrete slab floor. The tenants decided not to pay and we had to evict them. After we got them out we went to change the locks and inspect the property. We went into the living room and looked at the floor. Well the tenants decided that they wanted to have what looked like a cook out on inside of the house. They had burned a hole through the carpet to the concrete floor.

We had just spent like $1000 to carpet this house six months earlier. So we were not happy at all. At that point I decided that we need to look to alternatives to carpet. We looked at vinyl and ceramic but we were concerned that the same thing could happen to that. We wanted something that was durable but inexpensive. we meet another investor that had used OSB on the floor.

OSB is that chip board that Lowes or Home Depot sells in the building department. He glued it down, sanded it and put a couple of coats of polyeurathane on it. That wasn’t a bad idea at all but the problem was he did it over a plywood floor and we guess it glued down easy. We were looking at a concrete floor and saw that gluing that down would be a big hassle. Then of course it would have to be sanded and then sealed, so that involved a lot of work. The main thing that we didn’t like was that it was UGLY!

When you are looking to get renters into a house an ugly floor does not cut it, so we decided that wasn’t the way to go. I thought about it for a while and was discussing it with a guy that worked at Lowes and we were brainstorming ideas and he said that he went to a bar down in Fort Lauderdale that had used brown paper bags on the floor.

He said that he had been going to that bar every time he visits and that the place got lots of foot traffic. I figured that if a bar used it then it will have durability. I asked the guy how it was done and he didn’t know. At that point I was intrigued and decided to do some experimenting. I took pieces of plywood and started to try different methods of using the paper bags and after many trials I finally got it to a working process. It wasn’t hard to do, you just have to watch out for a few things, so to get it the look right took the most time of all. I must have cut up 3 sheets of plywood in 2×2 pieces and tried a different approach every time. I wanted it to look cool, with a faux effect, I finally figured out how to do it to make it look like marble.

We tried lots of different bonding agents and finally got one that worked great and gave us durability and flexibility to adapt to changing temperatures without cracking with a nice pattern to it. The very first floor that we did was with brown grocer parer bags, that is why we called it the paper bag flooring. We also tried lots of different papers besides paper bags to see what type and thicknesses worked best.

When we did the first one we added up our material cost and it was very cost effective. We bought a bundle of heavy duty brown paper bags from a paper distributor and the rest from Lowes. Here’s an over view of the costs:

Paper Bags $ 45
Bonding agent/glue $ 40
Urethane $ 80
Miscs. $ 30
Total= $ 195

We used the paper bags as well as several other papers so if you can’t get paper bags in quantity without printing on them, there are alternatives. We mentioned that because most paper supply companies won’t sell to you unless you have an account with them and there is no point to open up an account for one project. We had very good success with kraft paper in rolls.

We ended up doing about 900 square feet on that first project with the materials mentioned above. After we were all done, the test was when we were showing the house for rent. We ended up showing it about five time before we got a qualified tenant. Everybody that we showed it to loved the look. That most important feedback we got was from the first tenant, she said that she grew up with wood floors and loved that cool hard wood on her feet with the smooth urethane floors and that this was as close as you can get without hard wood floors!

She said it felt very nice to walk on and was very smooth and soft and it was as hard as a concrete floor! So it was very durable. After that we did all of our floors that way, we did it over concrete as well as plywood. After she moved out 2 years later, we didn’t even need to do anything to fix it. Well not really, there was a couple oh scrapes it it from a desk that was dragged on it, but we repaired it very easy ! we just re-did that spot. That is so much easier than a whole house.

We ended up doing over 15 houses that way and never had a complaint. We ended up doing several other projects with this style of covering, we did walls as well as ceilings. We had one home owner we met put it in a wine cellar and it gave the floors a rich brown marble effect that contrasted the wine bottles.

So this is a multifaceted decorating medium, we called it the “faux” paper decorating method and is only limited to your imagination.

This article was written by Anthony Talladino, who has renovated houses for the last seven years. He has been doing Faux flooring in most of those houses to save money on flooring costs. He has taught classes teaching the Paperbag Floor technique in a local Real Estate club, and has taught investors lots of tricks to save money. He wrote a manual on this beautiful technique and has pictures on his website showing what can be accomplished with that technique. The site is at http://paperbagfloor.com/.

Modular Home Floor Plans With Inlaw Suite

Modular Home Floor Plans With Inlaw Suite. Modular homes are becoming increasingly popular as homebuyers discover the affordability and durability of this type of construction.

Modular Home Floor Plans With Inlaw Suite. Modular homes are becoming increasingly popular as homebuyers discover the affordability and durability of this type of construction.

Another great feature of these homes is the ability to completely customize it with various design options. Choosing the floor plan that will meet the needs of your family and give you the look you desire will enable you to enjoy your home for many years to come.

Modular homes are manufactured in an environmentally secure factory and then assembled on-site. This type of construction allows for a durable home with a faster completion date and a lower price than the typical traditional home. These homes are completely customizable to meet the preferences of the individual homeowner. You can choose the floor plan as well as the options and features you desire most.

Home manufacturers offer hundreds of floor plans so that the homebuyer is able to find a layout that will make sense for his or her family. When determining the most appropriate floor plan for your modular home, there are some things to consider.

First of all, when choosing a modular home design, you should take into account the size of your family. You will want to be sure that there is plenty of space so that all of your family members have a place of their own. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms you choose will be greatly influenced by the number of people who will be living there. You will want to choose a floor plan that allows for the expansion of your family if that is a possibility in the future. This may include a new baby or family members who may come to live with you for extended periods of time.

Secondly, you will need to determine what your lifestyle preferences are. Are you a person who enjoys cooking and might benefit from a gourmet kitchen? Do you work from home and need an office? Does your family love to gather in one space for movie night? No matter what your preferences, there is a modular home floor plan that will enable you to enjoy your lifestyle comfortably with your family and friends.

Third, you will want to choose a design that will be most livable for your family. Older couples or those with mobility issues may prefer a one story ranch design while others may desire a two story home. Choose a floor plan that makes the most sense for the individual needs of your family members.

If you already own land in which to build your home, the amount and shape of the land will greatly influence the floor plan you choose. You want to build a house that will fit comfortably into the allotted space and look appealing from the road.

Finally, your budget is a big factor in choosing an appropriate floor plan for your modular home. Typically, homes with more square footage will cost more than those models that are smaller. You will want to have a clear idea of how much you have to spend so you can get the most house for your money.

Modular homes of today are not the manufactured homes of the past. Visit your local manufacturer to learn the many advantages modular home construction.

Kitchen Consigliere Byob. No kitchen design theme is complete without a great decor plan. Without the right home accessories and decor, your kitchen design can be boring and bland.

Use this guide for creating great kitchen decor design and you’ll be sure to get the perfect match of design and decor for the ultimate kitchen.

Planning Ahead

Without the right planning, your kitchen redecorating project might not go over so well. A good plan for kitchen decor design begins with creating a budget. Knowing how much you can spend before you start buying house decor can help you get a good start in the right direction. Once a number for your budget has been established, it’s in your best interests to create a cost breakdown list. This can help you define the decor design from the get go. Knowing exactly what’s going into your kitchen design can help you prevent costly impulse buying mistakes. With the right decor plan, you can get the most bang for your buck.

Keeping it Consistent

Any good kitchen theme is only as good as its decor design. Table decorations, wall art and other decor accessories that don’t match your design theme only work against your kitchen design. By keeping decor designs consistent, you ensure your design looks good. Metallic wall art might look great in a modernistic themed kitchen design, but other home accessories like a floral patterned flower vase will not. Keep your favorite decor items only if they match your kitchen design properly.

Lighting Displays

Lighting plays an important role in any kitchen design. From washing dishes to cooking dinner, task and ambient light sources help make a kitchen function. But accent lighting helps to display your table decor, knick knacks and wall decorations perfectly. A good decor design can only be properly showcased when lighting solutions like accent and aesthetic lights focus light onto your decor design.

Finding the Space for Displays

A kitchen space can be tough place to show off table decor and other small decor items. Finding a place for all of them can be difficult at best. Shelving, mantelpieces and even on top of cabinetry can be a great place to showcase your decor design. Glass faced cabinet doors and an interior lighting setup can be the ultimate kitchen space to display your decor items. Built in cubbyholes in kitchen islands can be the perfect place for your home accessories and decor. Wall space is extremely limited in many kitchens due to cabinetry and appliances. Take advantage of wall spaces like backsplashes to display wall art and decor.

Funny Wet Floor Signs

When you walk into a building most of the time, the first thing you notice is the appearance of the floor. Does it shine or is it dull and dirty? If it seems extra shiny it could be that the floor is wet and if so, there should be wet floor signs indicating such.

When you walk into a building most of the time, the first thing you notice is the appearance of the floor. Does it shine or is it dull and dirty? If it seems extra shiny it could be that the floor is wet and if so, there should be wet floor signs indicating such.

Wet floor signs are not simply to let you know the floor is wet, rather to give a visual warning that there is the possibility of unstable footing which could cause a person to slip and fall sustaining injury. If you mop or refinish your floor causing it to be wet and someone slips and falls and the warning signs are not in place, there is a big chance are you will get sued and you will lose.

Insurance companies and private industry lose millions of dollars every year because a wet floor was not marked with warning signs or wet floor cones.

A good rule of thumb to remember when using wet floor signs is to insure they are visible from every point of entry into the area where the work is being conducted. This will insure that anyone entering your work space will notice the warnings and take extra care as they pass through. Many of the signs today will not only be bi-lingual but have a pictogram as well giving an extra visual aid of the warning.

There are a number of different types of wet floor signs all designed to do one thing; warn of potential hazards due to the floor being wet. The most common type is the sandwich board style which is a two sided sign indicating the message. Another popular style is the pop up safety sign which looks like a pyramid with the visual warnings on each side. There are also expandable types and banner signs available. One other type is the cone style which basically looks like the cones you will see in a highway construction zone. Depending on each application and area to protect will help determine which wet floor sign is right for the application.

Using wet floor signs are the most economical way to insure the proper marking and warning of a potentially hazardous area. Always use the proper warning signage not just to be compliant, but more so to give visual warning so that people entering an area can avoid injury

Broadmoore Furniture Costco

Broadmoore Furniture Costco. Owning a full time retail furniture store business myself, I don’t get much time to watch TV. But when I do, I always come across those infomercials that help you get rich quick from stocks, real estate, and pyramid schemes.

Broadmoore Furniture Costco. Owning a full time retail furniture store business myself, I don’t get much time to watch TV. But when I do, I always come across those infomercials that help you get rich quick from stocks, real estate, and pyramid schemes.

The other day I came across a commercial for “Direct Buy” where you can buy furniture and home goods direct from the manufacturer, and pay wholesale prices, where you can join them as a member and get direct access to their furniture store and design center showroom.

First thing I thought was: “What’s the catch?”

Because Direct Buy has to make money, how does the customer only have to pay the wholesale prices? So I did some poking around and found some forums and posts where people are complaining that Direct Buy is a scam and their fees are outrageous. Fees? What happened to paying wholesale prices and saving a ton? But there were a few that said they had a good experience. So again, what’s the catch?

So after a reading a few posts on the Direct Buy topic at topix and various sources over the web, I got a good idea of what was going on.
The truth about the Direct Buy furniture store and home goods membership:

The commercial – you see it on TV spot ads where they pitch you a great idea about buying direct from the manufacturer and wholesaler. They have testimonials from customers that tell you they saved $20,000, $100,000 etc.

The sales pitch – So you are in the market to remodel your home and refurnish it, and you give them a call or visit their website. They give you a pass or invite you to their showroom tour. You visit one of their local showrooms and they herd you in seminar style and go through presentation slides about how great it is to be a member. Being a member you can buy direct and saves tons of money. And then they tell you how to become a member buy just paying the non refundable membership fee to get all these discounts.

The membership fee – Now are you ready? To know how much it will be to join this great network and become a member to save tens of thousands of dollars? The membership fee is a $5000 for a complete 2 year membership and $200 per year thereafter. (Supposedly, in 1996 it was around $1000).

The purchases – once you become a member after paying that membership fee, you can now have full access to their local showroom and design center to buy direct for your home.
Direct Buy is not the furniture store for everyone:

The way I see it is that Direct Buy is very much like an expensive Costco membership to buy a wholesale prices. So to save a lot of money you have to spend a lot of money. Based on my estimates, you would have to spend over $20,000 to make back the $5000 membership fee to save on discounts. Direct Buy pitches the fact that furniture stores and appliance stores have 200% markups. And that is not always true. If you took that membership money and translated it into some good shopping comparison time you will be able to get mark ups that are almost 10% to 20% above costs at some retailers. There is so much competition among stores and the internet, that prices are very close to cost nowadays, where business owners are just making enough to cover overhead and make money off of higher volumes.

Direct buy does charge a markup over the cost of the merchandise it sells, just lower than what the retail stores charge. But that is what you paid for by paying that $5000 membership fee. I am pretty sure they don’t offer financing, so you better have all the cash to make those purchases within 2 years, or else you risk paying more membership fees. Because I am aware of new homeowners or remodelers that take over 3-5 years to completely furnish their home. So I guess if you have $5000 lying around and about $30,000 to spend to save a few thousand dollars net, then Direct Buy is for you. Otherwise, take your time and be a bargain hunter, you’ll be able to save just as much and not have to lock yourself into a membership that will force you to spend money in order to save it (what a paradoxical statement).
Not everything you would expect compared to shopping a regular discount furniture store:

Buying direct from the wholesaler may not be everything you expected. You still have to pay sales tax and delivery fees. And you have the long wait times, because wholesalers allocate inventory for their bigger customers who are the retail stores, not the person that is trying to buy the single unit sofa. So compared to all the other customers, a Direct Buy customer probably is not viewed with high respect by the wholesalers. Items you purchase cannot be returned to the manufacturer if you decide it didn’t work out, unlike buying from the furniture store. And there are numerous comments that it is hard to get a hold of Direct Buy after joining or purchasing an item. So what about the customer service? You really need to know what you are doing if you join the membership. Because no one is going to let you into a club with the secrets of buying and saving direct for free, they charge you a fee and that is pretty much all you are going to get: access to buying direct from manufacturers. And you give up all the service and value of buying from a furniture store that values your business (because once you’ve joined, Direct Buy already made their money, they have no incentive to continue to sell you anything and provide you continued service – you’re already a member that can’t quit without giving up the initial membership fee).

If it feels like a scam and you’re asking what’s the catch? Then there probably is a catch. You just need to decide if you can live with that catch. If so, you’ve found what you need. I don’t believe in having to spend more money to save money. What I have said here are only opinions and all of you are free to comment, but I just thought that before you spend time calling and going to the seminars you should know what you are getting yourself into. The flexibility and freedom to spend when and where you want at your own leisure may be better than joining a club that costs you a lot upfront to know the secrets of saving money. If you decided you wanted to spend $30,000 in furniture for your home maybe you can try visiting my furniture store at visiondecor and contacting us through email or phone, I’ll be glad to have my customer service reps take care of you and give you a worthy discount. But I’m really not trying to sell you anything, I’m just trying to bring some light into something I saw as kind of “shady”.

Boat Flooring Options Fishing. Are you in the process of replacing the carpet on your used pontoon boat? If so here are a few helpful tips for doing the work yourself.

One customer recently asked me, he was thinking of replacing his pontoon carpet with indoor/outdoor carpet tiles and whether or not could they be used on boats?

I informed him I would not recommend using the carpet tiles as they will come up on the corners after time from the sun and water. I always recommend using one solid piece of indoor -outdoor carpet or marine grade carpeting.

Remove all the pontoon boat furniture including steering console and floor trim until you are down to the plywood. Now you can remove any of the carpet that maybe stuck to the plywood as well as any of the old adhesive that was left behind. You may need to do little sanding to you get down to a fresh clean surface. Now is a good time to inspect any plywood that may need repaired or replaced.

Next step is to roll out the new carpet on the pontoon boat and allow some time to allow carpet to flatten. Once the new carpet is ready to install, to back half the carpet and glue the new carpet and the floor of boat. I recommend using marine grade contact cement spray. It allows you would a couple of minutes to maneuver the carpet into place working out any lumps in the carpet. I prefer to glue at a temperature higher than 50 degrees and make sure you use a good new hook knife or carpet knife.

Now proceed into doing the same steps with the remaining section of pontoon boat floor and carpet. You may want to have another person help you with the installation as a second set of hands is not a bad thing. Now is a good time to go for lunch as you need to allow the carpet to settle a bit before next step.

Next step is to cut off any overhanging sections of the carpet and install floor trim. Now you can reinstall your pontoon boat furniture and steering console. Installing pontoon boat carpeting is really not big project to do yourself, especially if you enlist some help.
