These architectural styles were in vogue for houses, government buildings, and churches from the early 1600’s through the mid 1800’s. The earliest English settlements at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 and at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, became models of later colonial construction along the east coast of America. ´
The historic Spanish revival house plans spread with the earliest Spanish settlements in Mexico and the Caribbean. In the United States, the Spanish colonial style is best exhibited in St. Augustine, Florida, which is the oldest established city in the U.S., having been founded in 1565. The common houses in this town were covered outside with a whitewash of lime mortar; usually two stories tall, they included patios for outdoor cool-air breezes in the hot Florida climate. This style also developed in the American Southwest and in California, as Spanish priests established missions along the Pacific coast between 1769 and 1823.

The French colonial style spread in areas of North America settled by the French, beginning in 1608 with Quebec, and in 1718 with New Orleans, Louisiana. Other settlements spread along the Mississippi valley up to Missouri. Early French colonial-style houses are called poteaux-en-terre, and are made of heavy cedar logs set upright into the ground. They are surrounded by galleries (porches) to sit outside in the hot summer. By the 1770’s the French colonial style evolved into briquette-entre-poteaux, meaning small bricks laid between posts, which characterizes homes in New Orleans’ historic quarter. In areas where flooding was common, the raised-cottage style developed, with houses built on top of raised brick walls for protection from waters during floods. In dry periods these basements stayed cool, and were used for storage and cooking.

Perhaps the image which most readily comes to mind with the idea of colonial style house plans is Georgian colonial style, which was popular in New England and the mid-Atlantic areas of North America from the 1720’s to the 1780’s. The defining features of Georgian-style architecture are the symmetrical, square shape; central doorway, often with a decorative crown over the door and flattened columns on either side of it; and the straight lines of windows on the two stories. The doorway opens upon an entryway which leads to a hall and stairway which divide the house in two, with rooms branching off on either side from these. Usually Georgian houses were made of brick with wooden trim, with columns painted white. There are usually one, or perhaps two chimneys. The ground floor of Georgian houses has formally defined dining room, living room, and occasionally family room areas, with bedroom on the second floor.

The current upsurge of interest in colonial house plans includes the entire range of colonial style house plans, from English Georgian style to the Southwest historic Spanish revival house plans.

Stick On Backsplash Walmart

Stick On Backsplash Walmart. Is there really a secret to getting decluttered? Is there hope for the piles that lie in every corner of my home? Can I dare dream that I will open my closet one day and not have the contents fall on my head? I believe that there IS a secret to organization and decluttering and I’m willing to share it with you—anxious to share it with you, because it can change the look of your home, the atmosphere of your space, and the stress level in your life.

I propose that it all comes down to one main concept: whatever you’ve got, it needs a spot. Now don’t be deceived. While it may sound way too simple, there’s a lot of punch in that little statement. What were you looking for—an algebraic formula? What you need is a simplified idea that you can apply to every single aspect of cleaning, organizing and decluttering your home or space (it could be an office or apartment). The simpler, the better. It’s like a mantra that you chant as you wander through your halls, rooms, and closets. Start applying it little by little, and you will see miracles happening right under your nose. The sweetest payoff is that the more little piles that you clean, the more motivated you are to keep cleaning. This little phrase will dramatically change the way you feel about your home, it will energize you to do countless other projects, it will decrease your stress level, and it will change your home from a tornado to an oasis.

Just waking up and looking at the piles in our homes begins a day with stress. It creates feelings of unfinished business, endless projects and chore lists a mile long. This is depressing, discouraging and downright disheartening. I believe that you have all of the tools that you need to break down these stress-builders in your home.

Pick one room at a time, one pile at a time. Start slowly and I promise that you will gain momentum—probably sooner than you think. As you attack your first pile, remember the motto: whatever you’ve got, it needs a spot. Designate ONE pile as your goal for that day (or evening) and concentrate on completing that one task. Don’t make your goal too lofty. You will be encouraged when you accomplish what you set out to do.

Never underestimate the power of an empty spot. You will be absolutely amazed at how energizing it is to step back and gaze upon the now EMPTY spot in your room that you just cleared. By simply emptying ONE spot, you will be motivated to clean about ten more. But be careful, keep your goals attainable.

Invite a friend over for tea and tips. What you need is a second set of eyes and a discerning mind that isn’t your own. You need a friend who you trust to spend an hour or two with you, sip a cup of joe, and help you decide what to move, what to keep, what to give away, what to sell and what to do with what’s left. The power of another’s suggestion is very strong. It keeps you focused, keeps you motivated, and keeps you on task. A friend can also offer arbitrary advice that is invaluable when it comes to getting rid of our “stuff”.

Embrace the nitty gritty. Alright, get ready to dig in with both feet. You will be handling everything from big pieces of furniture to tiny scraps of paper. And sometimes the smallest item can of greatest value! Understand that your piles may have a whole bunch of nothing that can be thrown out, or that you may unearth something of buried importance. Either way, your determination and full focus (inspired by visions of huge amounts of space) are of vital importance.

Complete one small task that makes a big difference. This concept has saved my sanity time after time. Here are my two main examples. One, if your bed is made, your room looks clean. There can be piles of clothing here or there, but if your bed is made, your room looks clean and neat. There is a feeling of order and structure to the room. Two, if your kitchen counters are clear, your kitchen feels clean. There can be dishes in the sink, coats hanging on the bar chairs, and last night’s dinner casserole still sitting on the stove. But if your counters are clear, there is a sense of space, order and cleanliness. My kitchen counters are the bane of my household cleaning, because they collect EVERYthing. It is my constant battle to keep those cleared. But, when I do, I immediately feel less stressed and able to handle other chores or projects. Find the spot in your room that makes the biggest difference and keep it clean!

Okay, let’s get practical. Here’s what this really looks like. I have a pile of papers on my desk that are a thorn in my side. So I set aside one hour to dedicate to this menacing pile. Here is my plan of attack:

1. Go through each piece of paper and separate it into piles—things that I need to keep and should be filed, trash, papers that I need to respond to by either phone or mail, papers or coupons that go directly into my purse, and miscellaneous. I now have 5 smaller piles, and it’s only been 10 minutes! Okay!

2. Throw away the trash—down to 4 piles!

3. File the papers that I already have a file for, and make a new file for the rest. (This assumes, of course, that you have a file system and office supplies for additional files.)

4. Put the papers that go in my purse IN my purse (see how easy that was?)

5. Place the remaining pile on my workstation/desk area.

Okay, I still have that last remaining pile on my desk. But the whole task only took me 20 minutes and I set aside 60! I have time to have a cup of coffee, read a magazine and STILL respond to some or all of those silly papers. Everything is now in its spot! And you should see my desk! It’s beautiful!!! I’m ready for the next pile…

Here are some other practical tips on creating “spots” for everything else. In your bedroom, you need bins and boxes and baskets for your closet and under your bed. You have to create a spot for things like clothes that don’t fit anymore, clothes that need to be ironed, hats, shoes, sundries, “things” on your nightstand, etc. If you have a designated spot for anything that you find in this room, all it takes is for you to put it in the spot. The key is creating a spot—a bin under the bed, a shelf in the closet, a coat tree in the corner, an extra dresser or lingerie chest if necessary.

In your kitchen, get a recipe box; put your bread baskets in a corner of a closet; clear the top of the refrigerator; invest in Tupperware! In your bathroom, get cute baskets at WalMart or Target for your hair stuff; hang your hairdryer on a wall hook; purchase a small shelving unit with a door for extra storage. In your garage, there’s only one answer—BINS AND SHELVES! This involves a small investment, but it is well worth it to walk into your garage and see all of your stuff labeled and in bins. Are you getting the picture? Whatever you’ve got, it needs a spot!

In order to avoid clutter, you also need to have space between your pieces of furniture. Don’t line it up like ducks in a row. Have a piece or two and then some space. This also applies to your kitchen counter and backsplash. The day I learned this amazing concept was the day that space came alive on my kitchen counters. You don’t have to fill every single corner or wall or counter! Get rid of superfluous furniture, appliances and knick-knacks. You will be amazed at how clutter-free your home will feel. Space is directly related to levels of stress. The more space you have, the less stress you have. Don’t get me wrong, a house should feel like home and have warm touches and personal flair. Just find the balance between a museum and a zoo!

Does this all seem too simple? The best ideas are simple ones. If it was too complicated, we wouldn’t feel capable of completing it. Paper Bag Floor Over Linoleum

To remove Ink from your carpet, clothing or furniture, spray your everyday hairspray on the spot and blot till removed. Repeat spraying with hairspray and clean with hot water when finished.

Paper Bag Floor Over Linoleum. Solutions to restoring your wood floors. Wood floors are appealing to the eye and adds value to any home. In the early 70’s carpet hit an all popular high and beautiful hard wood floor were covered and concealed. Finding hardwood floors that can be restored under an old carpet is like finding a treasure. Most older home were installed with a higher quality wood. Depending on the thickness of the floor will help determine the type of wood used. To help determine if you wood can be restored look at the wear layers. Check for stains in the wood where liquid has soaked through the carpet. many liquid stains can’t be removed. Inspect what was used to install the carpet or linoleum. There are most likely tack strips and hopefully it has not been glued or it is not full of nails. The more minimal damage the better but don’t get discouraged there are ways to patch up almost any floor.

Screening is a way to refinish an old floor. A buffing machine can be used as long as the damage is not through the protective clear coat of the wood. Scratches are scuffed away with less dust than sanding. There are also chemicals available that chemically sand the finish. Then you can apply a clear urethane coat over your buffed or liquid sanded floors. You can typically walk on them in about a day.

You can also hand sand the floors yourself. This will of course require more work but is more cost efficient than most other solutions. Make sure you clean in between the wood planks and gaps before you sand. After you have finished sanding apply a semi gloss poly to add a great finish.

Renting a high powered sanding machine that professionals use is another solution. This will create a lot of dust but will probably create the best finish. A power sander is more efficient, smooth and can sand better than a household hand sander.

I have seen examples where some people have just painted their floors with a darker color to hide stains and slight imperfections and have applied a gloss over the paint to give it some shine. It does look good and is a quick fix but I don’t know how long this strategy will last if there is high traffic.

Keeping your carpet looking good. There are many stains that come from a household. Pets, guests, kids and everything else. Stains are treatable as long as they have not been left to sit for a long period of time. The sooner they are cleaned the easier it will be to get the entire stain up. And remember no matter the stain never rub it always blot it. There are different solutions to attacking a stain depending on what caused it.

For pet stains blot any access of liquid or the stain with a cloth. Mix dish washing liquid or detergent with water. Pour on the stain and use a new cloth to blot up the liquid. Next apply some undiluted vinegar to to the stain and continue to blot. Last use a damp sponge to apply water to the stain and continue to blot until the stain is gone.

For crayons or oil apply a dry cleaning solution to a damp cloth and bloth. Rinse with water and repeat.

To remove juices, tea or coffee. Blot all remaining liquids and remove as much as possible. Apply some club soda to the stain and continue to blot. if this does not work try a small amount of dish washing liquid mixed with water.

To remove Ink from your carpet, clothing or furniture, spray your everyday hairspray on the spot and blot till removed. Repeat spraying with hairspray and clean with hot water when finished.

If you have a candle that has fallen into your carpet. scrape up as much wax as you possibly can. Heat the wax by laying a paper bag over the wax and heating the bag with your iron. Repeat and continue to scrape till gone.

There are also carpet rakes available that brush your carpet so that it does not appear to be matted down and is great for removing pet hair.

If you have major water in your home there are a few thing you can do to help save your carpet. Use a disinfectant to clean the water damage to prevent bacteria from the water in your carpets. Always well ventilate the room if you have any major water damage.

If the water is on certain sides of the room you can cut the carpet up and fold it back. Vut out the damaged padding underneath and replace after the carpet had dried. Remove all furniture. If there is no where to go with it find something to elevate it off the floor so that the carpet can dry underneath. Find an industrial strength fan to add air flow. Use a shop vac or carpet shampooer just to suck up any access water. You can also add a dehumidifier to the space and it will help suck the moisture out of the room. If none of this helps you will have to replace your carpet.

Timberlake Sonoma Cabinets

Decision number one with any kitchen remodeling project begins with the cabinetry. Cabinets and cabinet accessories set the tone and personality of the entire kitchen and in some cases, up to 60 percent of the remodeling budget may go towards cabinets,” said Connie Edwards, Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) for Timberlake Cabinet Company, Winchester, Va., one of the nation’s leading cabinet manufacturers.

Timberlake Sonoma Cabinets. Take a good look around your kitchen. If you’re like most American homeowners there are several things you’d like to change about its functionality and appearance. And if you’re like most American homeowners, you’d rather make these changes than buy a new home.

“Decision number one with any kitchen remodeling project begins with the cabinetry.

“Today, many manufacturers offer semi-custom cabinet lines and coordinating accessories,” said Edwards. “These cabinet lines are quite popular with homeowners because you can specify sizes and interior fittings for a customized look at an affordable price.”

According to a National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) survey, nearly 30 percent of all cabinets chosen by homeowners are from semi-custom lines. “Semi-custom cabinets and accessory lines afford homeowners options not available with mass-produced stock cabinetry lines,” said Ed Pell, executive director of Kitchen & Bath Business, an industry trade publication. “Semi-custom lines offer many, many more design options and sizes. And most importantly, you get a customized look at a semi-custom price.”

To compliment semi-custom kitchen cabinets, many cabinet manufacturers also offer a range of decorative accessories. These accessories may include moldings for above and below the cabinets, valances for areas between cabinets, curved end panels and decorator doors.

Semi-custom cabinet accessories provide furniture quality accents and allow homeowners to create a variety of kitchen styles to match the decor of their home by blending with adjoining living areas. For example, roe moldings can be installed above wall cabinets to accent a crown molding and create a southwestern or country flair for the kitchen.

Semi-custom kitchen cabinet accessories also include open frame decorator door designs that accept glass inserts … countertop edge moldings … and counter supports which provide added design detail for today’s style-conscious kitchen remodelers. Counter supports can be used for open shelving and are great for island snack bars.

Semi-custom kitchen cabinents and cabinet accessories are typically available in oak, cherry, maple and other popular hardwoods. Choose a hardwood and a finish that reflects your style and taste. A finish that accents an existing favorite feature in your kitchen, like an appliance garage, cookbook rack, message center, bread box, wine rack or bookcase.

An added benefit which was not true of semi-custom cabinet lines a few year’s ago is that most are available for delivery within two to three weeks after an order is placed, compared to a typical order-to-delivery cycle of up to several months for fully custom made cabinets.

The Home Improvement News and Information Center provides information and resources for home remodeling, home improvement and home energy management projects. Southern Gothic Decor

Southern Gothic Decor. France, especially Paris, has been the artistic center of the world, since the 1230s. In the middle of the twelfth century, at the far end of the Romanesque period, Gothic Art was born because of a Medieval Art Movement, which lasted until the Late Gothic Art in 1500 and the onset of Renaissance in 1515. Gothic style is known for its characteristic architectural arched design of its churches, its stained glass, its illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, frescos, & panel paintings. Most of these were religious in nature and brought in new perspective that were both visual and spiritual.

Three successive stages, Early, High, and Late Gothic, have been identified. Gothic Age, spanning from 1280 to around 1500 AD, was also a period of crusades, which led to increase in trade relations through the European continent. This resulted in the flow of Byzantine Art and artists to Western Europe. This movement of artistic currents brought in a new ‘Naturalist’ and ‘Secular’ style called the ‘International Gothic Art.’ This style manifested in the different parts of Europe during the late fourteenth and into the fifteenth century. Late Gothic Art blended the Gothic ingredients with the illusionist art of the Italian painters.

During the Late Gothic Period, the architectural style evolved into a more decorative phase, referred as the ‘flamboyant phase,’ which lasted until the fifteenth century. Cimabue and Giotto were a couple of most important artists of this era. During the Late Gothic phase the shape, structure, and the function of the buildings were completely hidden with decorations that covered the outer surface, as in the “Church of Saint-Maclou” in Rouen, France. The interior of the buildings were kept simple by removing pillars and replacing them with plain masonry support. Similar styles appeared in England with their ‘Perpendicular Style’ at the “Cathedral at Gloucester,” Germany; where high passageways were favored, as in the towers of the cathedrals at “Ulm,” “Strasbourg,” and “Spain.”

Sculptures and painted glass are closely related to the Gothic Architecture. Both decorated the outer surfaces of cathedrals and other religious buildings. During the Later Gothic Period, the art style had become increasingly ‘Naturalistic’ & mellow with distinct faces and figures. The Late Gothic Sculptures of the “Reims Cathedral” in France; the facades of “Bamberg,” “Strasbourg,” and “Naumbourg” Cathedrals,” in Germany; Italian Gothic Sculptures of Scaliger Tombs (1345-59), Verona, Italy; and the works of Giovanni Pisano in Siena & Pistoia, & of Lorenzo Maitani at Orvieto, all endorse the excellent Late Gothic Art. By the late fifteenth century, sculptors started their own workshops in towns & they were more organized into guilds or fellowships.

Mostly religious in essence, the Gothic Art included ‘Typological’ presentation of “New & Old Testaments,” such as in “Speculum Humanae Salvationis” of 1300s. Virgin Mary acquired a benevolent mother’s look with increased human essence, like “Life of the Virgin.” Christian and Roman styled Late Gothic Frescoes decorated the walls of the cathedrals in Southern Europe, while stained glasses were practiced in Northern Europe. Panel paintings were in vogue by the fifteenth century, taking over even stained glass. Oil painting also set its foot in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, priming in Renaissance Period.

Another distinct feature of Gothic Art was the illuminated manuscripts with realistically rendered figures of the members of the royal family and nobility, especially in the “Très riches heures du Duc de Berry (1413-1416).” Late Gothic Art eventually evolved into ‘Classic’ Renaissance Art in 1515 AD, bringing the stunning creative period to a historical end.

Sink Faucets Walmart. Bathroom vessel sink vanities are so popular now that you can buy one at Walmart. In fact, you can buy eight different vessel sink vanities from Walmart online, though there are better places to shop. Here are some things to consider before you actually buy one.

These vanities usually have a stone top and glass, marble, stone, copper, bronze or other metal for the vessel sink. The vessel sink itself can be high and deep, almost like a cup shape, or much shallower and wider. Copper vessel sinks look nice with stone, but if you have one of the more ornately designed sinks (the ones that look more country-kitchen than ultra modern), tile is a workable choice. Black marble looks especially nice with the more modern design copper vessel sinks. Glass, even cloudy green glass, sounds great, but the final result looks weird — it is too easy to see glue, or some other telltale sign of construction through the glass. If you are totally in love with the glass-look, make the most of it in glass tiles for the wall. Copper and green glass do look good, but the finished effect should not show anything unsightly.

For practical use, you want the rim of the vessel sink to go up at least six inches to prevent too much splashing, and the bowl part of the vessel should be at least 15 inches wide. There are also vessel sinks that are square, and are set more deeply into the vanities, which makes them feel a bit more like standard sinks and may make some users more comfortable with them.

Finally, do not install the faucet for the sink too high, or you will get water splashing over the vessel, on to the vanity and then on to the floor. That’s a little bit more of a fountain effect than any of us wanted, I think.

You can get vessel sink vanities as small as two feet wide. Walmart’s cute Pegasus 24” Cherry Round Vanity with Vitreous China Vessel Sink is $431 right now. Shipping will cost you an extra $120. For extremely small spaces, the design rule is to have any “furniture” (your vanity qualifies as furniture) be see through. In other words, no enclosed drawers. That may be the rule, but in practical terms, you need a place to store toilet paper and other bathroom essentials, and it is neater to close them in behind cabinet drawers. Consider your space either way — both with an enclosed cabinet below the sink platform, or open and without the doors.

I have not found anything smaller than 24 inches for a vessel sink vanity. If your space can not handle even 24 inches, consider a sink stand or even a hanging sink. Vessel sink stands are usually metal. They look a bit like glorified plant stands, but some designs are interesting. Hanging sinks are attached to the wall, and have nothing below them at all… kind of like public bathrooms, but much, much nicer. They are ideal for really tiny bathrooms that make people feel like they can barely turn around.

Most vanities are 30 to 36 inches wide. Some double units are 60 inches across. Check out Signature Hardware (lots of rustic looks, good for country houses) and Home Decorators Collection (23 choices, more modern looking… suitable for a city apartment). Lowes has a good selection too, and you should take a trip there or to some other local retailer before you buy one of these sinks online… it is always best to “meet” an item like this in person before you buy it.

Pop Up Roof Tiny House. When you think of mobile or tiny living, childhood sleeping bags and bunks may spring to mind. Developments in tiny home construction, however, have advanced; designers are creatively meeting the sleeping needs of fashionable singles, couples, and families choosing to simplify. Here are some of the most popular sleeping options to consider when furnishing your new home.

Loft

Watch any tiny home-building show and you will see the loft appear time and again as a popular sleeping option. Lofts – the master bedroom of a tiny house – are platforms built close to the ceiling, which saves space below. Many prospective tiny homeowners find that the height of a home makes a huge difference when it comes to the comfort of a loft. If you want your home to go on the road and pass under bridges without trouble, increasing the roof height to add headroom inside the loft is often not an option. If a loft is for you, look for a custom mattress that can be built as wide as you want but without the depth, which saves headroom.

Foldaway Bunks

When moving into a tiny home with children, finding sleeping space for both the adults and young ones can be tricky. If you are struggling to envision little beds taking over your limited square footage, foldaway bunks may be the best option. These beds lie flush against the wall and unfold for use using strong hinges. You won’t have to deal with tall bunks taking up space during the day, and your kids will love helping you “assemble” their sleeping area each night. Foldaway bunks may come pre-constructed or custom built with materials that match your decor.

Slide-out Bed

Similar to foldaway bunks, slide-out beds hide in plain sight during the day and are easily accessed when you’re ready to sleep. Typical versions are hidden underneath a sofa. Some double as a dining table and bench. These slide-out units pop-up, creating a full-size sleeping surface. If you have extremely limited square footage and are disciplined enough to clear your table or couch each night, a slide-out may be the best option for you.

Murphy Bed

Another magical option, Murphy beds allow you to incorporate extra storage in your tiny space while accommodating another sleeping area. This custom option flips up and is hidden away-usually in a shelving unit-during the day. The thinner the custom mattress, the closer the unit will lie against the wall, maximizing floor space. If you have friends who are brave enough to spend the night in your small quarters, having a Murphy bed option as a “guest room” is a welcoming touch.

No matter your bed selection, a custom mattress will allow you to get the sleep you need in the space you have carved out in your new home.
